Frugal Friday- Washin the Veggies

food137.jpgLet me tell you how my heart leaped when I saw my Mom and Sis using reusable shopping bags. and eco-friendly cleaners and organic cereal. and veggie wash for the non-organic produce. (hmm… let me just take in that moment again)

I am so proud my family has come around to practicing the stuff that I believe so strongly in and have been sharing with my blogging friends.

But, as we all know money is tight right now just about everywhere with gas and food prices soaring like a runaway helium balloon. Finding a balance with saving money and living healthy is an issue I wrangle with every time I shop.

So when I saw my mom using an expensive veggie wash, I of course, had to let her know how great that was, but let her also know that it is waaaay more economical to make your own. Then I thought? huh. Never shared that with my blogging buddies either.

Well, here you go:

  • juice from one lemon
  • 2 tablespoons of white vinegar
  • 1 cup of water

Place all ingredients into a spray bottle. Shake, shake, shake. Shake your … bottle.

To use: Spray produce. (do not use on mushrooms) Rub a dub and rinse.

I know I can’t afford to use all organic veggies, but I can afford to get the pesticides off the ones that aren’t.

I feel good…

Years back, in the pre-children days, I was a vegetarian. I made that choice for the mere fact that the thought of eating dead animals disgusted me. I never liked meat, even as a young child, and the eating of it was a constant battle with my mom.

I started eating meat again when I met my hubby. One particular Thanksgiving he cooked a delicious turkey that kept calling my name. I fell off the wagon and enjoyed the easiness of only cooking one dinner for our family, which at the time was my hubby, A, and myself.

Another thing about my childhood was that it was wrought with upset stomachs. I would eat- I would have stomach issues. My doctors have always attributed it to IBS, prescribed many meds, all of which I never took.

Several times my mom made mention that maybe I was supposed to be a vegetarian, because during the years that I forwent meat, my stomach issues disappeared.

A few weeks ago I had hit the ceiling. Two weeks of non-stop upset stomach made me search for a solution. Hubby, who often made jest of my vegetarianism, suggested I give it a try again. We discussed menus and how I could easily do this with our family menu. With his support, I decided to give it a whirl.

It has been a little bit of a challenge cooking wise, as the rest of the fam still wants meat, but it’s worth it. I am still working out if I will eat eggs and such, but testing them with my stomach will end of being the deciding factor.

It was been a week and a half and I have yet to have an upset stomach. Not even once. Which in terms of my history is a first in many, many years. Not only is my stomach feeling much better, but I feel good. Like I returned to my roots of who I am supposed to be.
