Keepin’ it Real

Not sure if any of you realized it or not, but I haven’t been posting as much about going green as I once did. It’s not because I have stopped my quest to reduce, reuse and recycle, because I am still going strong.

Actually, why I have stopped (and not so happily- I feel like I am not in my right element), is because going green seems to be the new fad. On one hand - Yay! I am so happy that we all are making strides to do our part.

On the other hand, ugh! I think it’s a fad. We all know what happens to fads. They fade.

It also bothers me that it seems like more blogs than not, are posting their tips on going green. Change lightbulbs, clean green, etc. Then 2 days later I see them post their CVS purchases which contradict everything they posted about going green. It makes me wonder if they actually believe what they posted.

Now by no means am I in anyway perfect in my attempts to be more eco-friendly. I can say that I do try and practice all that I preach. Yes, I slip up every so often- usually when I haven’t planned properly. I do, however; honestly try and keep my tenant of reducing, reusing and recycling all as often as I can.

I applaud all efforts of anyone who is trying to do their part and make a change. What I am calling for and urging even, is a little more action or maybe even new ideas. I am fairly certain that most people know to switch their light bulbs by now. Almost everyone has been made aware of using harmful chemicals. We all know to cut back on the plastic bag usage.

Why not kick it up a notch? I know that I am not able to buy as much organic food as I would like. We just can’t afford to do so. I don’t expect that every person is going to be able to do everything that has ever been suggested to going green.

Instead of giving up completely because I can’t do something, like buy organic, I try focus on something else I can do. Like Reduce! Not only is this a green option, but frugal, too.

This is why my posting of ideas on being more green have started to trickle. I am slowing down on things to suggest that haven’t been suggested by every other blogger and morning tv show already.

My point in writing this post was not to point out faults or be negative, but to request that we all do our part to not just make this a fad. Let’s take all the talk and ideas and incorporate them into our daily life as a consistent function. Let’s make it real!

I totally agree with you! We should try to incorporate green activities into out everyday life. Ill have to admit that going green is the new black, but that shouldn’t be your reason to stop what YOU’RE doing. More blogs need to continue to be posted, so then maybe people will get the hint. Pop culture says that when something is a trend, everybody follows. If Beyonce goes green, you can forget it!

If you’re looking for more ideas than here is one you should consider…BIOHEAT! What is it? The hottest thing in the green community that’s what. Its heating oil blended with biodegradable, organic materials such as soybean and corn oil. It works wonders in the winter too. I mean, as cold as I get I’m glad I found out about it because not only does it make my winters green, but they’re comfy and cozy too.

Working for NORA has helped me find out more interesting ways to go green. I got most of my tips from

You should check it out and see what cool info it has to offer.

Man I’ve been trying. Silly as this sounds it takes practice to remember. My son is very good at reminding me as this is the huge thing in his school right now and I’m very thankful for it. Plus my company I work for is big on it right now…man if we could just figure out a way to generate less paperwork! Anyway hope all is well with you. Lyns

I’m on board with you. This very contradiction you talk about is called “greenwashing.”

Yes, I’ve been writing a lot lately about going green, but it’s where my heart is right now. I want to be in the black and in the green. You know what gas prices are like.

One of the local Whole Foods Market locations added more bike racks for the huge surge in bicycle traffic to the store.

The idea of going green was impressed upon me early in my schooling. I do it because I genuinely feel better. Eating more vegetarian dishes has the added bonus of a direct and immediate positive impact on me too.

If you are committed to getting greener, I’m all ears and eyes.

I totally agree with you. “Green” advice is becoming the talk of the Net, almost too trite to be useful. I’m working harder on turning the talk into action; carrying my own bags, starting the spring compost again, and buying local whenever I can.

[…] the post where I ranted on about the ever so popular green movement? Well, “praise the lord and pass the ammunition,” I am not the only one who feels this […]
