Frugal Friday- Chilly News

My freezer is getting pretty empty, of food, at least. I haven’t made the time to work on stocking it up lately and the pickings are pretty slim.

Unless, of course, I would like to feed my family a 4 course meal of newpapers and magazines. Huh?

I have mentioned before that I have a magazine addiction and have been looking for ways to effectively recycle all that pretty paper that a magazine includes. While I have been ever so slightly cutting back on my magazine subscriptions, I have added another paper waste, better known as the Sunday news.

For years I wouldn’t subscribe to the newspaper because I didn’t have time to sit down and read the thing and they are just too big to be reading in the car at red lights. Oh and they are dirty. And wasteful if you don’t read them all, which I don’t. I do however need the coupons out of the them, so I gave in and subscribed to the Sunday edition.

When trying to figure out what to do with all this paper besides stack it in the recycling bin, I remembered something my grandparents used to do. Admittedly, as a kid I thought they were so strange because of it.

That’s right. Pack it in your freezer. The more packed your freezer is, the less energy it takes to run the thing. When my food gets low, I fill it up with newspaper and magazines. This also keeps my deep freeze from accumulating all that impossible frost that it takes up space.

Another bonus is knowing that I always have plenty of paper to put down for all my projects with the kids.

Obviously, this saves me money and helps reduce my impact on the earth. You know that is what I all about. Easy. No grating, no mixing, no secret potions this week. Just a simple way to use some clutter for good.

That’s brilliant! I hadn’t thought to use magazines. In the past, I’ve taken empty juice or milk containers, filled them with water, and stuck them in my freezer to get a similar effect.

Wow, what a great idea!!! The only reason I get 1 paper a week is for the color comics, which I collect. And in Canada they are printed on Saturdays. So that’s the only time I buy a newspaper.
