Frugal Friday- Now if I could just get some milk

A little over a year ago I made my last excursion to the local Sam’s Club and vowed to never ever return…And I haven’t. My membership has expired and I have no plans for renewal. The only thing I miss about my membership is the discounted gas and I will have to live without that, because I am not signing back up anytime soon. Let me count the reasons why:

  1. The place is just dripping with temptations to buy unhealthy food. Very little, if any, are organic. The items that aren’t completely oozing high fructose corn syrup (reasons to avoid high fructose corn syrup - Thanks Ali) are not very well priced and generally not worth the extra trip. Plus all the cleaning items are like mini chemical factories. No, thanks.
  2. Too many temptations. I used to go in there with a small list and walk out with triple the amount of what I had planned on buying and completely broke.
  3. Just 2? I felt like there were more reasons. Hmm… Well, 1 and 2 are enough reasons for me, I guess.

popscorn.jpgAfter I gave up shopping at Sam’s I thought I had given up buying in bulk. I was a little disappointed because on some occasions it really CAN save money, if you do your homework. Then, as a true follower of the ever so wise Mir I was introduced to the wide world of Amazon grocery shopping. With deals! In bulk and organic! I have been doing my homework and the prices really are quite a savings compared to what I am paying at my local grocery store. PLUS. FREE, yes, FREE Shipping!

I did do the crazy little mind debate thing, that I am SO famous for, trying to figure out whether this is really a green choice or not, and I decided that it was pretty much right down the middle. I always accept the free shipping- ground- which IS the greenest way to ship packages according to Danny SEO. I figure I am buying in bulk and organic items so possibly my runs to the store may be decreased and well? I am saving green (money) and that’s really important to me.

Not only am I saving money, but sanity as well. If I could buy all my groceries online, I probably would. The joy of shopping in pajamas, sans kids, sans deafening screeches of ” I waaaaant that!” and “Stop hitting me!” really are a bigger bonus than the gross little samples that other place hands out. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the long lines…

I buy poultry (we don’t eat red meat), TP, and cereal at Sams CLub. I used to buy organic milk there, but they stopped selling it, and that’s one thing I absolutely won’t buy unless it’s organic. Otherwise I just go to the local grocer. But I should look into the amazon thing, just haven’t price checked to figure out if I’d save much.

That is why I love Costco, because they do have quite a few organic products, including milk. And they give their employees decent wages and health benefits, so I’m there.

But, it looks like I should check out the grocery shopping online.

[…] few weeks ago I wrote about saving money on groceries by buying them in bulk through Amazon. I even put a picture up of my favorite popcorn, Newman’s Own Organics […]
