Frugal Friday- The Laundry Edition, Part B
The long awaited day has arrived. A little dramatic, I know. It did seem that many of you were not digging on the idea of grating soap and all, but were a little more interested in getting the recipes that only required mixing. I understand completely! With this school business taking up so much of my time, I am not sure how many of my little projects I will be able to keep playing around with like a mad scientist.
The Stain Remova’
- 1/2 cup of borax
- white vinegar
- 32 oz. spray bottle
Dump the borax in to the spray bottle and add white vinegar to fill. Put nozzle in; close. Shake well until you see borax has been dissolved.
To use: spray stain remover on stain; let sit for 15 minutes. wash.
I have great success with this remover, but have heard that if all else fails, you can squirt some lemon juice on the stain, and hang the article of clothing out to dry. The sun will naturally bleach the stain right out. I have yet to do this yet, thankfully, because I haven’t had the need.
Onto The Fabric Softena’
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 2 cups of water
- 10 drops of essential oil
With caution, put all items into a bottle, I used an old squirting water bottle. Baking soda and vinegar will explode, so I suggest adding the baking soda a little bit at a time to the liquids and watch as the fizz goes down before adding more.
To Use: Shake well. Add 1/4 cup to fabric softener dispenser.
The fabric softener recipe I got and tweaked a little from The Frugal Shopper. I have been using this softener for about 2 months now and am really loving it! The essential oil doesn’t stain the clothes because the amount is so little and it makes a nice compliment to the laundry detergent.![]()
Both of these items are environmentally friendly, washer/dryer friendly and inexpensive. Oh! and easy. So, so easy! If you decide to give them a try, please let me know how they worked for you and if you have any suggestions on how to improve them.
Next week: make your own dishwashing detergent

Careful, though; it’s toxic. We’ve used it as weed killer to get rid of our creeping ivies.

I’ve been looking for some time on ways to make my own detergent. I think what puts me off is the effort and the fact that I buy eco detergents from the supermarket. However I have used bicarb of soda in the washer to get rid of musty smells from clothes. It worked a charm.
