Frugal Friday - Gas Challenge

caspergas.jpgThis summer I decided to take my own challenge and see how far I could cut my gas usage down. I actually did very well. From the start of summer to the end of summer, I was able to cut $10/week off my cost, bringing me down to $20/week. Since school started and we have changed schools, my balance and scheme to slimline has not yet come around again, but I am working on it.

The last 2 weeks I have spent $35/week on gas. My goal is to cut that back to $30/week. Here are some of the methods I have used to cut back save:

1. Keep a small cooler in my car. It’s always hot here in Florida :( Sometimes, it’s not always the best route to stop at the grocery store last during my errands, so I just stop when it’s on the way and keep items in the cooler.

2. Check tire pressure monthly. It is said if you keep the pressure in the proper range it will save $.10 on the gallon.

3. Plan trips accordingly. For me I have a tendency to want to go to ABC store TODAY! NOW! But, really, I don’t need too. I am trying to plan trips better so that I will go to ABC store when I am passing it by as I head to XYZ store.

4. Carpool. and not just for school. My neighbor and I often are heading to the same stores on the weekend. Why take 2 cars when we can just go together? We save on gas and sometimes have a more enjoyable trip together. I read that carpooling 2 days a week can cut an individuals annual CO2 emissions by 1,590 pounds!

5. Only fill up with as much as you want to spend. I have found that I think things through a bit more if it’s Wednesday and I am on a quarter of a tank of my $30/week gas.

What kinds of tactics do you use to cut back your gasoline usage?

Great Ideas! I really try to think through my errands and take the shortest routes. I will have to try some of your ideas!

I try to plan my stops by my trip route, rather than just going to store ABC or XYZ as the need/want arises, as well.

And, happy birthday yesterday :) (You aren’t showing up on my bloglines anymore for some reason, and I forgot to stop in…)
