Sweet, Sweet Life
This morning has been extremely busy. Besides being extra diligent to spill eggs and coffee on my clean clothes (which I ironed, folks. IRONED. I hate ironing!) I have been discussing the politics of bank mess ups and fraud. Good times.
Have you heard about the Sweetbay fraud situation? Pretty sweet, huh? The good news is that although we are never lucky enough to receive a visit from Ed McMahon, we are lucky enough to be one of those Sweetbay customers who had their credit/debit card info stolen.
Actually it was my hubby’s card, but it has caused a ripple affect all over. While we have not be told affirmatively that his card’s number was stolen as part of the Sweetbay debacle, it does seem rather timely that we were contacted by our banks fraud department a few weeks ago to see if we somehow created a superfast traveling machine which allowed us to charge gas in our home city and buy things at Home Depot in Kansas within minutes of each other. Unfortunately, no.
To stop further charges, the fraud department canceled his card, and reissued another one. Yesterday, hubby activated his card and went off to buy gas and take a large sum of some money out at the ATM. Gas alone, at 3.23/gallon for his car is almost equal to our mortgage payment.
When I woke up this morning and checked my email I had a nice little surprise for me. A very negative balance in MY account. My first thought is that someone stole my card number. Thankfully, no.
What did happen was the brilliant people at our bank linked my hubby’s card to the wrong account. Mine instead of his. My account is more of an accessory account, we don’t keep a lot of money in there.
After several rounds of phone calls and a trip to my local branch, we have it all squared away. I won’t have funds back into my account until tomorrow, but at least it’s all set up. Thankfully, I have an emergency fund, or could drive across town and get cash from hubby if needed. Ridiculous experience all together, though.

Eeek. Glad you are getting this mess cleaned up. At supermarkets around here there was a different kind of fraud involving credit cards. The clerk would tell you that your card isn’t going thru and then loan you his/her cell phone to call your bank/credit card company. You know how most call centers are automated and you have to enter your 16 digit account number and your pin? Well, this info was then stored in the clerks cell phone enabling them to access your account. No worries though, they got caught quickly.

What a hassle! I hope that you don’t have anymore issues with this. It’s really scary how much damage can be done when something like that happens.
You ironed? What possessed you?

Oh, boy! What a day!!
I don’t like to iron either. So…I usually don’t. I take clothes out of the dryer, one or two items at a time, while they’re still barely damp, and I hang them up. I mist any wrinkles I see with water, and the wrinkles fall out by the time the clothes are dry.

Frankly, it sounds like you need to change banks.
One thing that I find to be interesting is the lack of concentration that so many people have these days in terms of doing their job right. I have had so many experiences where company employees have just simply done stuff that they should not have done. And the real kicker is that when you tell them that they have done something wrong they have the audacity to get offended. Thus they become defensive and in some cases downright rude.
There is no doubt that customer service isn’t like it used to be. I imagine this is likely due to the fact that demand has increased and as a result of employers wanting to cut back on costs they don’t hire as many people to do the work that is needed to keep up with the demand. Hence employees are forced to do 2-3 times as much work while getting paid very little for it. It’s no wonder they’re messing up, as was probably the case with what happened to you regarding the balance that should have been on your husband’s account and not yours.

Sorry that happened. My friend just got back from a trip to China. Used his card once and used it at the hotels they stayed at. His information was stolen and it was rang up.
