Frugal Friday- Da juice

Lately my throat has not been feeling quite right. Scratchy, sore - the typical spring-is-coming allergies type of feeling. Whenever I feel this way I start craving some orange juice.

Back in November when I was part of the Great Plastic Challenge, I vowed to stop buying juice in plastic bottles. I thought this was a great idea, but then Fake Plastic Fish alerted me to the fact that frozen juice containers and paper cartons were plastic enhanced; I was disappointed.

I found a few concentrated juices in aluminum cans and began buying those instead. Only one store in my area, that I typically didn’t shop at, carried them.

juice-003.JPGImagine my delight when I opened my National Geographic Green Guide and saw they had an entire article on which orange juice is the best buy. They based their ratings on:

  • nutrient preservation- how much vitamin C
  • transportation - how much does the container weigh per ounce of OJ
  • container manufacturing- how much energy is used
  • typical price per gallon

Basically, the article compares the health and environmental impact off all stages of orange juices from frozen concentrate to not from concentrate in plastic containers. While they tout that organic is obviously best, there is a clear winner in the regular category, too.

The best buy in all areas? Frozen concentrate! It has the highest health benefits and the least environmental impact, plus it is the least expensive. I know it’s geeky, but this has me very excited. Who says you can’t be frugal and green?

I usually buy frozen concentrate, mainly for space issues…

Our family is a HUGE proponent of Listerine when it comes to sore throats- It usually knocks them out really quick!

Cool… thanks for the information! I had a sore throat last night; and had to stop drinking the iced tea I was sipping on… it just irritated it. I would hate to try orange juice on a raw thoat.
