Frugal Friday V…

Today I purchased a clothesline. I am not sure why I hadn’t done this before, knowing that it would save money on electric and help save the environment. I have an energy star dryer but decided that I could do even better by hanging clothes to dry rather than use any energy at all (besides my own). The last few days I have been hanging as many items as I could on a stand up drying rack in my garage, for a trial run to see if I would really follow through on taking on this extra work. So far, so good.

Spring has started to peek its head out around here. Some of my bulbs I planted a few weeks ago are shyly starting to show some green pushing through the soil. The outdoors is calling my name and dreams of gardening are in my head. I figured hanging and retrieving clothes are in order since I want to be outside anyway. Once summer, the rainy season, hits I am not sure I will be as brave as I am right now. I can honestly visualize using more energy trying to dry clothes before the rain hits everyday, but we will see. Maybe I will be in good practice by then.

Lastly, to those of you that can join in on the good old fashion fun of hanging clothes out to dry in the fresh air, I would implore you to do so. Not only can you save a few dollars every month, but you will be doing a great service by conserving energy. And if you are like me, doing almost 3 loads a day, that can really add up!

If my HOA didn’t have a rule against clotheslines, I would so totally put one up! But, I at least also have an Energy Star dryer, so I’m doing the best I can.

When my dryer went out I hung my clothes for about three months. I never could figure out how to get them to not be stiff. Any solutions?

It’s still in the 30s & 40s here; I don’t think I’ll be joining you on this very soon!

We need a new washer/dryer and were trying to decide which one to get. I’m looking for wrinkle free.

As a kid, I spent every August in Maine and New Hampshire with my dad and my step-mother would hang the clothes on the line to dry. I loved the smell; fresh mown grass, the breeze…like summer had infused your clothing.

Unfortunately in the urban wasteland where I live (industrial Oakland) it is not a possibility.

Hell, I don’t even own my own washer and dryer!
