Frugal Friday- All Purpose Cleana’

I know when I say this it is going to sound somewhat snobby and I don’t mean to sound that way. I really don’t. I have not been using traditional chemical cleaners in my house for quite a time now. It is very rare that I spend a good amount of time at other people houses, mostly due to the fact that keeping such a close eye on my kids is more stress than I like to bring into my life on a consistent basis. This past week when I spent time at my MIL’s though, it brought something to my awareness that I otherwise probably never would of thought of if I hadn’t been there. Chemical cleaners really stink. Like strong gross stink. Like enough to make me vomit after holding it down after Toby expelled partially digested food all over the floor.

I know I have mentioned before that I have a super sensitive nose and when I used normal cleaners on a regular basis I never noticed the smell of them. I guess I was simply used to the “clean” smell. This past week I decided that the smell of clean is really a relative term. My MIL’s house and cleaners are ridiculously-I could only dream of clean, but the smell of clean? too much.

I have briefly mentioned my switch to organic and homemade cleaners. I had AlabamaBrands comment that she likes the different scents of cleaners and that was holding her back from switching. Well? I have found the solution. Cheap. Safe. Stinks nice. Environmentally friendly. I know, too good to be true. You can just thank me by leaving praise in my comments. :) Here’s what you need to do:

-buy or even better recycle a cleaned spray bottle.

-put 1/8-1/4 cup of vinegar in bottle

-put 1-2 Tbsps. of baking soda in bottle (carefully too much can cause an explosion!)

- fill rest of bottle with H2O

- add a few drops of essential oil ( I used some Chinese Cinnamon- $3.95 for bottle- I love it)

I buy my essential oils at my local health food store, but know that they are available from a variety of places including Amazon. Over all the entire mix cost me under a dollar per bottle. My house smells nice, my things are clean, sanitized (vinegar=natural sanitizer), and I don’t worry about my kids ingesting them. If I have an extra tough stain on my white counter tops, than I sprinkle a little baking soda and rub it into the stain, wipe down with my dubbed, ” All Purpose Cleana’ (I love to throw my NE hometown accent into names whenever possible) ” and voila! gone.

Now come on, I know you want to try it… and if you do, drop me a line and let me know, what essential oil did you use? I love to try new scents and would welcome the suggestions!

This is a great idea. Thanks! I might have to try it out soon. I can’t stand the smell of traditional cleaners too.

What size bottle are you using? I want to make sure that I am not diluting my stuff too much with the water part.

I am using a 32 oz spray bottle. The cleaner is mostly water, but still does a great job.

You know, I used to use vinegar to clean the floors, but then I read it wasn’t an effective sanitizer. I will have to do more research on this.
