Frugal Friday- Milk, milk…
“I don’t know what to write about today. Do you think I should share my milk scheme with them?”
“I guess.”
“I’m just not sure if they will think like you first did-it’s gross. Or will they just think I am crazy.”
“They probably already know that.”
“True.”
One of the easiest ways to go green with your food, is to buy organic milk. If you still aren’t sure why you should buy organic milk (and meat) then I would suggest reading My Year of Meats , which was one of my favorite reads this year, or checking out the top ten eco- friendly reasons to buy organic meat and dairy.
I will admit. Normally, I will only buy organic milk and meat. This is not the most frugal. These items are expensive compared to the hormone and chemically laden regular products. My convictions are firm though, so I take the plunge and stick to my beliefs.
Now, before I tell you my secret, you may want to lean in closer, because I don’t want my kids to know what I do or it may skew their entire drinking habits. Anytime they get a whiff of some impropriety like sneaking veggies into their favorite dishes, they refuse to eat it anymore. I am afraid they may do the same with milk. So far, they haven’t discovered my secret and I don’t want this to change.
Water. Yes, that’s my secret.
Since they turned 2 years of age I have switched them over to 1% or skim milk, as suggested by pediatricians. I don’t buy 1% though. I buy whole milk. Then I take the whole milk and divide it into 2.
Half the milk stays in the container it came in, the other half goes into the last emptied container of milk, that has been washed out. Then I fill the milk cartons with water and shake. Viola! 1%- ish milk!
The first time my hubby saw me dividing and mixing he was all “What?!!?!! What ARE you doing?”
Then I told him how long he has been drinking it like this without noticing. Then I made him try some and he came around.” You know I am turning the man slowly
I feel really good about my decision to do this. Once I divide one thing of milk into two, the cost comes out to about the same as the regular milk. Not only that, but I am cutting down on packaging and space in my fridge!
This may be over the line for some of you. That’s okay. I understand. But I urge you to give it a try. Simply pour a half glass of whole milk and fill the rest with water and mix. You might be surprised at how well you like it…

It takes me long enough to go through one carton of (organic) milk. It would definitely go bad by the time we went through it twice.
