Photo Pilfering
You may have noticed that I post my fair share of photos on here. I’ve always felt a little nervous about doing so, but decided that they add “color” to my blog. Some bloggers are really clever and have pictures up that don’t directly display their child’s face, but I am not so talented. My pictures usually involve a lot of work to actually get my child to stay still long enough to have their face in the picture.
Then earlier this week I read about a picture of Joy Unexpected’s children being stolen off her site and used in a slimy advertisement. That gives me the creeps. Big time. Ultimately, the picture was taken down by the advertiser, but still! There could be pictures of my children floating around the net that I many never come across. That bothers me.
I don’t want to stop posting pictures of my family. At this point in time, actually, I refuse. What are my options, though?
I have seen some talk about watermarking the pictures. I guess I could do that. I don’t have Photoshop on my laptop, where I do my postings, but I could hop onto one of our other computers, I guess. But, I wonder if that would really make a difference? Is there a way the theives could take the watermark out?
I’d like to hear from you. What are your feelings on the photo fiasco? Any ideas on how to put up pictures, but still have protection from thievery?

I’ve got mixed feelings - at best - about putting my daughter’s picture up on The Internets. Using her face, without our permission, for an ad is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. At least in our circumstances.
Wondering out loud if you could put the pictures up as either a password-protected post or make a password-protected gallery. That might be a solution…

I made my photos private, but still post them sometimes on my site. I know they could still be “stolen” but I just dont want to remove them entirely. I dont know if there is a good solution!

Yup that story creeped me out too. As to Watermarks, yeah they are easy to remove. Besides, You wouldn’t want to obscure those adorable faces would you? I’m afraid it’s really a black or white decision. Yes, you do have recourse if your images are stolen for profit, but not for personal (shudder) use. But of course that’s only if you find out about it. So do you give strangers as well as friends access to images of your children or do you let the bad guys frighten you into hiding them away?

I don’t post pics of the kids, part of the blogging deal with my husband. I don’t know that there is a good solution…

Scary yes!
BUT, what’s a blog without pictures? I think the grandparents and aunties and uncles wouldn’t like that too much. I don’t have any solutions here…
on another not- I have “stolen” your pics myself. I have a few (maybe 2 or 3) of your family saved on my computer, I was able to see them bigger when I did. No plans to make any advertisements though

Uck that’s awful! I don’t think there is any way to protect it…once your pictures are in cyber space, they are there to stay! I’m always nervous to put up pictures. I’m more nervous when I think of all the FREAKS that are out there!

I haven’t seen that you could take pictures when they are on a slide show. I could be wrong…..

You have to upload them to a site like photobucket. They don’t have to be public if you have an upgraded account.
