to everything there is a season

I have been dragging my heels in writing about this. When MamaBlogga first announced her GWP, “Savoring the Season, ” my first reaction was negative as I am completely against anyone celebrating any season because it is a reminder to the fact that seasons are scarce around these parts. Of course if you consider, hot, mildly hot, and OMG I HATE FLORIDA HOT, then we got seasons.

Then this other season creeped into my head, which is equally as depressing and something I don’t want to think about. Ok, so in some sense it is depressing and on the other hand, it is exciting. Guess it depends how I look at it at that moment.

We are about to kiss away one season in the boogie abode and embark on the next one. As school winds down and I am busy signing kids up at new schools, it is very poignant in my mind that we are at the end of an era.

This year will be the last of my Ty being a preschooler as he heads off to full time Kindergarten next year. No more leisurely afternoons, no late mornings, no snuggle time after a small cat nap. There will be homework and projects to be done.

A will be starting middle school next year. She is leaving childhood and heading into the throes of puberty. I can say that I couldn’t be more afraid.

Toby will be going to school five days a week. No more special mornings with Mama. No sidekick as I cruise the shelves at CVS. No late mornings in his jammies.

I was very ready to leave the babyhood season behind. I love babies, but love the preschool age even more. This next stage appeals to me getting some of my personal life back, but I am not as excited to embark on this one.

I am sure things will be fine and I will discover new loves in this next stage. But for now, I am holding on a little tighter to what we have right now. I am taking a mental picture and recording what it is like at this very moment because it all goes by too fast.

As my kids have gotten older, I’ve become even more involved with them. It gives me time to volunteer at the schools and become a part of that portion of their lives, yet still have an hour here and there for myself. I don’t love that they’re getting old so quick, but I like the freedom I have! I lost myself there for awhile, and I’m glad to have me back!

It’s a big milestone — each one of these is a big milestone! I enjoyed my children and their friends in middle school and high school. We were one of the “hangouts” for my daughter’s friends, and I loved having the kids around. Besides (haha) then I knew what they were doing.
I hope you enjoy, not just survive, your child’s adolescence.

It’s always tough when they move from one stage to another (except the diaper stage - that was sooo nice to leave behind!!) Great post.

It’s funny how we (or I do, anyway) tend to spend the first few years wishing they’d grow up faster and the next few decades wishing they’d slow down!

    Thanks for participating!

I like your analogy. My daughter is starting junior kindergarten in the fall - it will be mostly the same as daycare but it has great import (if not actual importance). I’m looking forward to Reid being a big girl because she is but I love her little girl self, too.
