The Great Plastic Challenge- Week Hana*

(*Hana means “One” in Korean)

One of the groups I joined over at NaPoBloMo is “The Great Plastic Challenge.”

Have you heard about the Pacific Garbage Patch yet? Do you need something to blog about? Each week, choose one plastic-packaged item that you buy regularly and commit to PERMANENTLY substitute a home-grown or non-plastic-packaged alternative.

juice64ozstock-none-z0-w201-h167.jpgI love challenges, am always looking for ways to be more green and Tadah! Instant blogging fodder. For the next few weeks, I plan on posting one thing I will be changing to meet this challenge.

This week it is juice bottles. I have been debating doing this for a bit, but this past week I have made the change. Instead of buying the plastic juice containers (like my usual Northland), I will now buy juice that comes in a glass bottle or paper carton.

More likely I will be buying frozen juice. While the selection seems slimmer, it really does save money and packaging. I have even found a few inexpensive organic frozen juices, too. I like to water things down and juice is no exception. I use about half the can of frozen concentrate so ultimately I get 2 out of 1.

I am thankful for:

Blogging camaraderie. I have made some awesome friendships through blogging and come into contact with amazing people. I am just so excited how many bloggers signed up to join the 30 days of thanks group. When I started this last year, I never could of guessed it would be something others would want to do. It brings me joy when I think about how many people are pausing daily to think about the good in their lives and this world.

Yeah!!! You rock the casbah. Breaking the juice habit will save lots and lots of plastic. My favorite juice in glass is Lemon Ginger Echinacea from Lakewood Organic. Spicy!

Great challenge! I’ve been working to eliminate plastic from my life since June, and I have a lot of ideas for you on my blog, Fake Plastic Fish. In fact, I wrote a post listing all of the changes I have made so far. Please check out the following link for inspiration:

And feel free to leave comments about any solutions you have found to the plastic problem that I may not have yet thought of!

I can’t even express how much I love your blog! The tips and tricks you give are always so helpful. I’ve been trying to switch my family over to all organice (especially meat and dairy) after reading an article about a little girl who menstruated for 3 months straight and started developing milk in her breasts. The only alternative seemed to be to give this poor girl a hysterectomy (spelling???). That is until her father did some research on the growth hormones given to cows. Switching their daughter to organic meats and dairy cleared up the problem almost immediately. Scary, scary, scary!!

I really hate plastic. I have seen so much of it washed up on beaches because governments just dump it all out at sea. It’s disgusting and it’s horrible to think what it’s doing to the environment and wildlife.
