Digging to America

Is it that I am never satisfied? Probably. I tend to have that thirst in life for always wanting more, more, more. (ok, I will spare you the break into song of “Once Bitten Twice Shy,” by Great White. Yikes, I can’t believe I am even admitting I know that song, never mind that it is forever stuck in my head!) Anyway, I digress. I finally read Digging to America, by Anne Tyler. I had heard nothing but rave reviews about this book, but I am not sure I can ride that wave. For me, it was alright.

I enjoyed how Ms. Tyler used a different narrator in every chapter. You get to discover the story from different perspectives thus drawing a more rounded conclusion. Although the story was mainly about two different families that adopt from Korea, the overwhelming theme behind the book appears to be that everyone has their insecurities, even if they appear somewhat perfect to another person. To this theme, I concur. The thing I didn’t like about this book was how it ended, or not ended I should say. The book was somewhat strange. It never really climaxed. Then as it just was tra-la-la-ling along it suddenly ends. Almost like the writer just decided, ok, I have had enough of this book, I’m done… When I think about it, I am not sure what I expected it to do, but I did have so many questions when the book ended. I guess life, like in this book is like that though.

Overall, I would recommend this book and I am planning on checking out more of Anne Tyler’s books. I like how she wrote with honesty and I felt that she had a grasp on a variety of readers. When she wrote tandems about how foreigners felt about Americans and living in the US, I laughed out loud. It sounded like some people I know too well and laugh to myself when they go on their own tangents.

The next book I will be discussing will be Secret Girl over at The Written Word. I have to say this has been a fun book club so far, and I would suggest anyone who doesn’t have time for a traditional book club, but still would like to be involved, well this is the place for you!

Hmm. I’ve always wanted to be in a book club. Might just have to check this out!
And, by the way, you always give such great book reviews. They are honest and fair, and it seems as though you make a point to find something positive which I love. Anyway, thanks for sharing! I love reading book reviews.
