First Memories

I remember when you were fresh and new. I looked at you with curious eyes, wondering what you would bring to our lives. I was afraid to bathe you, to drop you, to find out you were sick. You were delicate, but strong.

I changed you several times a day, at any notice of spit up or less then perfectness. I cradled your head like a delicate flower. I rocked and sang to you and lost myself in your eyes. I worried that I would not be good enough for you. I worried that I made a mistake in thinking I could handle this.

I sanitized anything that almost dropped on the floor. I only bought you the newest and best. I signed you up for the must-have classes; I organized the required play dates and playgroups.

Now as I snuggle with you, while you eat a piece of candy you found on the floor, in your dirty, second-hand clothes, I smile and chuckle at how much we both have grown.

Sweet babies that they are, they don’t notice our mistakes — only our love. When they’re teens, well…don’t think about it. :)

That’s so sweet! I had a cousin who once flipped out because we she was about to go into Savers and swore she would never wear “second hand clothes”…now 6 years, two kids later, she has a discount card at a second hand store. Cracks me up.

This is oh so true! It’s funny how we grow as parents and the anxieties and paranoia fade away as the years go by… Another great post!
